What is the Refractive Surgery?

Refractive surgery is a surgical procedure used to correct the refractive errors.

  • Excimer Laser Surgery
  • Intracorneal Rings
  • Phakic intraocular lenses
  • Phako-refractive Surgery

The Excimer Laser is a beam of ultraviolet light that is computer-guided and applied with great precision on the cornea to change its shape. There are several techniques of Excimer Laser applications and the decision of choosing one over the other depends on the individual characteristics of each patient:

A Lamellar cut into the cornea is made to allow the application of laser technology.

No cuts are made. The corneal epithelium is removed manually or with the laser.

Other Features:

  • The visual result with any of the techniques described is the same
  • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia (eye drops) (gotas)
  • It is ambulatory (outpatient hospital).

The technology used is the excimer laser Esiris Schwind, one of the most modern tools in the world that use a wavefront for correction of low and high aberrations, which allows a custom ablation. This system provides patients with a postoperative vision of excellent quality, not achieved with traditional systems.

Potential candidates

Beginning at the age of 18, people are potential candidates for surgery. However, in some cases, it is possible to operate on patients who are under 18 years of age.
It is important for those patients who are interested in surgery, to have a stable refractive error; This means that it’s not progressing quickly; They must not have a serious eye disease such as Cataracts, Glaucoma or Keratoconus, or severe systemic disease such as Diabetes or Arthritis and should not be pregnant.
